Mohammad gets a pass

It does indeed appear that big media shows a deference* to the sensibilities of Muslims that it does not show to the sensibilities of Christians.

(Or perhaps, as Michelle suggests, it’s not deference but fear.)

Chicago Sun-Times:

As hostile as the religious right was to “Last Temptation,” no one put out a fatwa on its director, Martin Scorsese. Islamic extremists did, in fact, put out a contract on writer Salman Rushdie, for his irreverent depiction of Muhammad, and did kill a Dutch filmmaker for portraying violence against women in Islamic societies. “No one can say a bad word about our prophet,” said a newly elected female Hamas representative in the Palestinian parliament. But Palestinians see nothing wrong with describing Jews with words like pigs and monkeys and sanctioning efforts to teach children to hate and even murder Jews. (Link)

A colleague from Nigeria described Islam to me as a “very pugnacious religion.”

This is a very good reason why gays and lesbians should not get ALL their information from Leftist sources. As a lesbian Christian who frequently tries to explain to other GLBT folks how I manage to forgive those mean Religious Right types for their crimes against us, I often find myself up against a wall of almost invincible ignorance.

How on earth can we possibly consider the Jerry Falwells, Pat Robertsons and other assorted nutbags in the same league with Osama bin Laden and his minions? That doesn’t mean we should let anti-gay Christians who bash gays off easy, but for heaven’s sake, it should put things in some sort of intelligent perspective. I don’t recall anyone on the Religious Right calling for my execution. For that matter, I’ve never been locked in a burning building because I wasn’t wearing a veil, a burqua, a bag over my head or whatever the hell else the local mullah demanded.

There are many good people who now welcome us into their churches, and who fight for our full inclusion — often at considerable risk to themselves. I notice that the gays and lesbians who’re always boo-hooing about all those mean Christians (and, incredibly, comparing them to the Islamic extremists) never mention them.
