RUDY STUMBLES: I don’t share Captain Ed’s dire assessment, but I agree this is problematic:[pP]>quicktime licence warez
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told CNN Wednesday he supports public funding for some abortions, a position he advocated as mayor and one that will likely put the GOP presidential candidate at odds with social conservatives in his party.
It will also put him at odds with the party’s social libertarians. I’m mildly pro-choice. But I don’t think the Government has any business paying for abortions. Even if we assume arguendo that abortion is a constitutional right, it doesn’t follow that the Government should pay for it. You have a constitutional right to freedom of the press, too. But don’t expect the Government to buy you a printing press.[pP]>quicktime licence warez
Also, this is baffling:[pP]>quicktime licence warez
“Unlike what some of my opponents have said, I’m not in favor of gay marriage,” [Giuliani] said. “I have consistently said marriage should be between a man and a woman. I do think that people who have a sexual orientation one kind or another should not be discriminated against.”
The GOP presidential candidate also said it’s not his place to judge whether homosexuality is immoral.
“It isn’t my role to determine what is a sin, what isn’t a sin,” he said. “What my role is, what is legal, what is illegal, I have been really clear on that role throughout my life.”
As it relates to homosexuals and homosexuality, what should the law say? Here the mayor inappropriately conflates sin with immorality. Something can be a sin without being immoral. I grew up in the Church of Christ, which is quite fundamentalist. We believed that the use of musical instruments during worship was a sin, i.e. contrary to the teachings of the New Testament. But I don’t think any of us would have said that musical instruments were immoral.[pP]>quicktime licence warez
The law might not be properly informed by notions of sin. But it is properly — and unavoidably — informed by notions of morality. After all, what is the case against murder if not a moral one?[pP]>quicktime licence warez
As president, Giuliani would not just say what the law is; he would say what the law should be. In fact, that’s the whole reason you run for president: you want to decide what the law should say.[pP]>quicktime licence warez
Now answer the question, Your Honor: As it relates to homosexuals and homosexuality, what should the law say? You indicated that people shouldn’t be discriminated against because of sexual orientation. As a matter of law, what should that mean?[pP]>quicktime licence warez
